Gene Therapy for Restenosis: Progress or Frustration?
No systemic pharmacological treatment has been shown to convincingly reduce the incidence of restenosis after angioplasty in patients. The lack of success of many pharmaceutical agents in reducing restenosis rates post-angioplasty and following stent-implementation shown in dozens of clinical trials has encouraged the development of new technological approaches as treatment. Gene therapy has th...
متن کاملGeometric frustration and dimensional reduction at a quantum critical point.
We show that the spatial dimensionality of the quantum critical point associated with Bose-Einstein condensation at T=0 is reduced when the underlying lattice comprises layers coupled by a frustrating interaction. Our theoretical predictions for the critical behavior correspond very well with recent measurements in BaCuSi(2)O(6) [ S. E. Sebastian et al., Nature (London) 441, 617 (2006)].
متن کاملShould treatment recommendations for lipid lowering drugs be based on absolute coronary risk or risk reduction?
When individual variables were subjected to logistic regression, male sex, age, blood pressure, smoking status, and cholesterol concentrations were all significant predictors of heart disease but when corrected for the Framingham risk score no single factor remained predictive on its own. The figure shows the number of coronary events predicted by the Framingham model and the number observed du...
متن کاملIncentive or Habit Learning in Amphibians?
Toads (Rhinella arenarum) received training with a novel incentive procedure involving access to solutions of different NaCl concentrations. In Experiment 1, instrumental behavior and weight variation data confirmed that such solutions yield incentive values ranging from appetitive (deionized water, DW, leading to weight gain), to neutral (300 mM slightly hypertonic solution, leading to no net ...
